Every admission season the same family debate repeats. Beta needs something for college, tablet le ya laptop? Both sides are right for different students, so instead of a verdict, here are the five questions that settle it for your specific case.
1. Will they type long documents regularly?
Assignments, reports, coding, resumes. If yes, laptop, full stop. Tablets with keyboard covers can type, but a student who writes daily deserves a real keyboard and a real file system. If the writing is occasional and notes are mostly handwritten, a stylus tablet actually beats a laptop for note taking.
2. Does the course need specific software?
Engineering tools, Tally, coding environments, design software. Most serious course software runs properly only on a laptop. Check the college’s software list before deciding, this one question overrides everything else.
3. What is the honest budget?
Under Rs 25,000, a good tablet beats a bad laptop every single time. Laptops at that price are e-waste with keyboards, while tablets like the Redmi Pad 2 deliver a genuinely good experience, our full shortlist is here. Between Rs 35,000 and 50,000 the laptop side becomes real, and the choice returns to questions 1 and 2.
4. Where will it be used?
Hostel bed, bus, library corners, a tablet’s portability and battery win daily. Fixed desk at home, the laptop’s screen-and-keyboard comfort wins.
5. Is this the only device, or a second one?
An only device leans laptop, it simply does more things acceptably. A companion to an existing family laptop leans tablet, and for pure study-plus-streaming, something like the Galaxy Tab S10 FE at Rs 56,999 is built exactly for students with bigger budgets.
The cheat answer
Commerce and arts students with light software needs, tablet plus the family’s existing laptop for emergencies. Engineering, coding and design students, laptop, no debate. Comment with the course and budget, and we will reply with a straight pick.
